The search for identity and meaning has been ingrained into our DNA since God first created mankind. Unfortunately, some have altogether abandoned the idea of seeking that out, conceding to the notion that we are only here to live and die…no more. Others have been propelled to seek out that importance along other fruitless avenues. One such program is SETI, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, a program launched in 1974, and investing millions of dollars annually in an attempt to locate and identify intelligent life in the universe. One researcher has stated that a discovery of this nature is the “greatest possible scientific discovery of all time.”
Did you catch that? The greatest possible discovery. What does that mean anyway? What about the Golden Goose, the Fountain of Life, or Atlantis? Needless to say, no intelligent life has been detected in the 35 plus years of futile seeking. Their identity is still lost in the uncertainty of their cosmic loneliness. To a world that looks to the cosmos for their identity, they will continue to hear nothing, not because there is an absence of intelligent life, but because they are looking in the wrong place.
These people believe they can initiate communication with intelligent life sources out there, but in reality, communication has already been established and it was God who initiated it. Hebrews 1:2 says, God “in these last days has spoken to us in His Son.” Jesus is the way God is seeking to establish contact with us, and He has sent forth His Son, and His Word to enable that communication.
The problem is not that God is not there. The problem is coordinates. They are looking “Out there,” when God is right here. The problem is, if people have to admit God is available right here on earth, they may have to submit to Him. In their world perhaps, it’s better to concentrate on a nonexistent life source way out in the cosmos, one which will require no submission.
God promised the people of Israel that He was there and could be found, “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” (Jeremiah 29:13-14). That means we don’t need radio telescopes and complicated algorithms to ascertain cryptic messages from the depths of space…we only need to investigate God’s Word and search for Him with all of our heart.
Incidentally, the great cosmos are sending a message, but it is not a message absent the majesty of God. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” If only they would see…
Time to reconfigure the coordinates. God is calling. Pick up the phone.
